He was quiet when he returned. For days, he barely said a word. I didn’t push him, and only partially because his silence scared me. I knew a part of what he’d been through, and I didn’t presume to know what it was like. The pain he was in was clearly debilitating, and I didn’t want to complicate his life by forcing him to talk about it. At first, I felt the best I could do was to just be there for him, if he wanted to talk, or if he needed something, or for any other reason. My heart ached with the desire to do more, but I managed to refrain from nagging him, somehow.

She edged around the tree, wishing she had considered a possibility like this. But who thinks to, really? Who considers, and I mean actually considers, the possibility that the charming guy you’ve just met is a psychopath?

It was no use, talking to them. They were all insufferably stupid. Ignorant didn’t cover it; not that they were well-informed, mind you, but they certainly held ill-devised opinions on issues that, frankly, should be the sole domain of logical, progressive thinkers such as herself.
